The agreement was signed by the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command and Marine Alutech Oy Ab. The programme will expand and sustain the mobility of Finland’s coastal forces across the country’s archipelago.
Known as Jurmo-NG, the new vessels will retain the general external design of the Finnish Navy’s existing Jurmo boats. Marine Alutech will introduce structural updates based on operational experience and current naval requirements.
The first Jurmo-class boats were completed in the early 2000s, establishing the type as a transport platform for coastal operations. Some vessels in the current fleet underwent overhauls around the beginning of the 2020s.
The boats are primarily intended to transport personnel and support Finnish Navy units operating in the archipelago. Their speed and shallow draught are suited to movement through coastal and island waters.
Each Jurmo-NG will be 14 metres long and 3.7 metres wide, with a displacement of 15 tonnes. The design has a draught of one metre and a maximum speed of 30 knots.
The vessels will operate with a crew of two. Each boat will carry one 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun.
