Micropol Fiberoptic provides critical cables for Rheinmetall’s Skynex air defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

Micropol Fiberoptic has announced its key partnership with Rheinmetall in developing Skynex system, a next-generation solution for short-range air defence. Skynex is designed to protect against various airborne threats such as drones, missiles, and aircraft, setting new benchmarks in flexibility with its open, modular architecture.

At the heart of Skynex’s performance is the integration of multiple radars and sensors. Micropol’s high-performance military-grade fiber optic patch cables ensure rapid and reliable data transmission, enabling seamless communication between critical components like the Oerlikon X-TAR3D Tactical Acquisition Radar and the system’s control node.

Micropol’s cables have been tailored to Rheinmetall’s specifications, delivering robust performance in harsh environments. Each cable undergoes rigorous testing to guarantee maximum data transfer speed and reliability, featuring cut-resistant designs and durable connectors capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -55°C.

The system’s modular design allows for customised configurations based on mission requirements, and Micropol’s fiber optic cables play an essential role in interconnecting these components efficiently. The cables ensure that large volumes of data generated by high-resolution radar systems are transmitted instantly, enhancing the system’s ability to respond to multiple aerial threats.

“We highly value our long-standing collaboration with Rheinmetall and are proud that our products contribute to advanced air defense solutions like the Skynex system,” says Adam Svasek, Regional Sales Manager at Micropol Fiberoptic GmbH.
