MISCO launches cobot-assisted micro-speaker manufacturing in the United States

By Defence Industry Europe

The MISCO Speaker Company, a leading American audio technology manufacturer, has announced a significant development in its production process. The company, celebrating over 75 years of operation, has introduced collaborative robotics (cobots) to assist in the manufacturing of micro-speakers at its Energy Park facility.

This innovation makes MISCO the first U.S. manufacturer to mass-produce micro-speakers — compact audio components under two inches in diameter — using cobot technology. The use of cobots addresses a longstanding challenge in micro-speaker production, which has traditionally been carried out overseas due to its labour-intensive nature.

Micro-speakers are critical components in various industries, including defence communication systems and medical devices, where precision and reliability are paramount. By incorporating cobot-assisted manufacturing, MISCO enhances both precision and scalability while also strengthening supply chain security for sectors that require U.S.-made components.

Dan Digre, MISCO president and CEO, highlighted the importance of domestic manufacturing, stating, “Customers in sectors such as defence and medical are increasingly prioritising domestic sourcing for critical components. Our investment in cobots makes U.S.-based mass production of micro-speakers viable, ensuring quality and traceability for mission-critical applications.”

The Energy Park facility, where this advancement takes place, boasts state-of-the-art features to support production. These include an acoustical testing lab, environmental testing chambers for rigorous conditions, and 3D printing for rapid prototyping. MISCO’s manufacturing processes are ISO 9001:2015 certified, adhering to international quality standards, and comply with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), crucial for defence industry applications.

In addition to defence and medical uses, micro-speakers produced at the facility are applicable in aerospace systems, wearable technology, IoT devices, and portable communication equipment. MISCO’s efforts to reshore production address a growing demand for secure, compliant, and domestically manufactured audio components across multiple industries.
