This order extension further increases thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ record order book, which currently stands at approximately €16 billion. The expansion reflects continued positive developments in the marine sector and highlights Singapore’s trust in tkMS’s expertise and capabilities.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, expressed his satisfaction with the deal: “The order expansion underscores the generally positive market situation in naval shipbuilding and gives us the opportunity to further expand our very well-filled order book. We are also proud that Singapore has once again placed its trust in us, as our partnership goes far beyond the production of submarines. We feel deeply connected to the country and contribute to the security and defense capabilities of our customer’s country with our products.”
Despite high capacity utilisation projected until the 2040s, tkMS confirmed that the additional order can be managed within existing production capacities in Germany. In December 2024, the company secured major contracts, including four Type 212CD submarines for the German Navy, the new Polarstern research icebreaker, and funding for the F127 frigate generation project.
The new submarines for Singapore will meet the highest technical standards. The design of the Type 218SG submarine is optimised to reduce its signature, enhancing stealth capabilities. Furthermore, the air-independent propulsion system enables prolonged underwater operations.
The order will bring the total number of Type 218SG submarines built for Singapore to six, following the previous deliveries of the “Invincible”, “Impeccable”, “Illustrious”, and “Inimitable”. This expansion demonstrates Singapore’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defence capabilities through state-of-the-art naval assets from tkMS.
