U.S. plans major F-35 weapons expansion with AARGM-ER, LRASM, JSM and StormBreaker in 2027, Meteor and SPEAR 3 in 2032

The U.S. F-35 programme plans to field a broad package of new weapons in September 2027, expanding the stealth fighter’s role in air-defence suppression, maritime strike and attacks on moving targets. AARGM-ER, LRASM, the Joint Strike Missile and GBU-53/B StormBreaker lead a roadmap that extends to Meteor and SPEAR 3 in 2032.

The schedule is detailed in the F-35 Modernized Selected Acquisition Report prepared for the fiscal 2027 president’s budget. The document, effective April 21 and cleared for publication on August 3, offers one of the clearest official timelines for the weapons and supporting systems expected to shape the aircraft’s next phase of development.

The Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile-Extended Range, or AARGM-ER, is scheduled for initial fielding in September 2027. The report describes the weapon as an evolution of the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile and AARGM, giving the F-35 another option for operations against hostile air-defence systems.

LRASM Capability Increment 1 is due in the same release window. The Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile is described as an autonomous, stealthy, air-launched cruise missile designed to destroy high-value maritime targets.

The Joint Strike Missile is also scheduled for September 2027. The multirole, air-launched cruise missile includes a ground-strike capability and two-way communications, according to the report.

StormBreaker, formally designated the GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II, completes the main group of weapons targeted for that date. The 250-pound-class precision-guided glide bomb uses a two-way data link and is designed to engage moving and fixed targets.

Taken together, the planned integrations would broaden the F-35’s ability to engage air-defence sites, ships and mobile targets from a single platform. They also reflect the programme’s shift from building fleet numbers toward expanding the combat value of aircraft already in service or under production.

The September 2027 package reaches beyond weapons. It includes Integrated Fire Control, new electronic-attack and countermeasure techniques, improved emitter identification and an upgrade allowing the AIM-9X Block 2/2+ missile to receive information through a one-way data link.

A Multi-Ship Infrared Search and Track capability is scheduled for the same period. It is designed to combine infrared information from several F-35s to improve passive detection, ranging and identification of airborne targets.

The roadmap also lists the Next Generation Distributed Aperture System for September 2027. The system is required for Technology Refresh 3 operational capability but will not be backward-compatible with Lot 14 aircraft, according to the report.

A second major weapons wave is planned for September 2032. It includes the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, the UK-specific SPEAR 3 stand-off weapon and a low-observable pylon for LRASM, JASSM and JASSM-ER.

Meteor is identified as a UK-Italian missile with ramjet propulsion and improved endgame performance. SPEAR 3 is described as an all-weather, turbojet-powered weapon in the 250-pound class with network-enabled functionality.

The low-observable pylon would allow the F-35 to carry larger stand-off weapons externally while addressing the need for a reduced-signature carriage option. Its 2032 fielding date is separate from the initial LRASM integration planned for 2027.

A comparable low-observable pylon for AARGM-ER is scheduled for September 2033. That release also includes long-range synthetic-aperture radar identification, improved maritime target identification and a wide-area sea-search mode intended to expand coverage and reduce pilot workload.

The weapons plan is tied to a wider overhaul of the F-35’s sensors, computing architecture and communications. The programme intends to field the “Six in the Bay” configuration in September 2030, increasing the aircraft’s internal missile load from four to six without relying on external weapon stations.

Other capabilities scheduled for 2030 include a two-way data link for the AIM-120D and improvements to the Multifunction Advanced Data Link. The MADL upgrade will introduce a dynamic mesh network intended to reduce connectivity losses between aircraft.

The planned weapons releases form part of 55 priority Block 4 capabilities supported by the fiscal 2027 budget. The programme is concentrating on improvements for air superiority, suppression of enemy air defences, kill-chain operations and the integration of high-priority weapons.

Delivering that roadmap remains dependent on Technology Refresh 3, which provides the computing power and memory needed for Block 4. The report says TR-3 hardware is being installed in production aircraft, but complex software development continues to present difficulties.

The programme also identifies the technical maturity and number of Block 4 capabilities as significant schedule risks. It is responding with incremental development, closer technical oversight and an expansion of laboratory, simulation and digital-test capacity.

Nine new flight-science aircraft are planned to replace the ageing F-35 test fleet. The fully instrumented jets are intended to support Block 4 development, weapons integration and faster certification of future capabilities.

The report does not assign every weapon in the roadmap to a particular F-35 variant or operator. Its dates represent planned programme fielding milestones and remain subject to development, integration, flight testing and certification.
