Nammo and BAE Systems sign agreement to boost munitions collaboration

By Defence Industry Europe

Nammo and BAE Systems, two of Europe’s leading defence firms, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore joint opportunities in munitions and energetics. The agreement was formalised at the British Embassy in Oslo, with British Ambassador Jan Thompson CMG OBE in attendance.

The MoU covers ammunition ranging from 30mm to 155mm calibres and is aimed at deepening cooperation between the two companies. It also includes a potential collaboration on establishing additional rocket motor production capacity in Norway.

The companies have a history of working together in areas such as munitions supply and improvements in explosive and propellant manufacturing processes, particularly in Raufoss. These efforts have supported the defence needs of Norway, the United Kingdom, and various export markets.

Tomas Ramse Andersen, Senior Vice President Business Development at Nammo Group, said: “The strengthening of the partnership between Nammo and BAE Systems creates new opportunities for Norway and our allied customers.” He added, “Both Nammo and BAE Systems are recognized leaders in munitions and advanced defence technologies, and deepening our collaboration is a positive step forward for defence capabilities in both Norway and the UK.”

The UK is among four countries being considered by Norway for its future frigate programme, which is part of a broader defence partnership. The UK proposal is centred on the Type 26 frigate, built by BAE Systems in Glasgow, featuring the BAE Systems Mk45 five-inch naval gun.

If Norway selects the UK’s offer, Nammo and BAE Systems plan to work with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) on a new rocket motor production line. The companies also intend to explore establishing a Norwegian manufacturing solution for the Mk45 gun’s five-inch ammunition for both national navies and potential export.

Steve Cardew, Business Development Director, Munitions, at BAE Systems, commented: “The growth of the collaboration between Nammo and BAE Systems offers significant additional potential for Norway and export customers.” He continued, “Both of our companies are well-known for our expertise in munitions and wider defence technology and enhancing our work together is good news for both Norway and the UK.”
