Another iteration of the NATO Innovation Challenge is underway, focusing on innovative digital solutions for mobility, transportation, planning, and interoperability. The NATO Innovation Challenge is organized by Allied Command Transformation and serves as unique brainstorming process that is aimed at addressing and improving Alliance-wide challenges.

The next iteration of the NATO Innovation Challenge has opened, and will be accepting abstracts through October 5th, 2023. The focus is on Military Mobility: NATO is seeking innovative ideas, concepts, and solutions for military transportation planning, interoperable monitoring, and efficient planning applied throughout the Trans-European Transport Network.  Some key focuses include interoperability with civilian systems, real-time tracking of transport-related data, road and rail infrastructure digitalization, threat resilience, and information sharing with diverse stakeholders.

The NATO Innovation Challenge was initiated in 2017, features two iterations per year, and serves as a brainstorming process and platform to address Alliance-wide challenges. Led by the NATO Innovation Hub from Allied Command Transformation, the NATO Innovation Challenge also coordinates with NATO Member Nations to understand priorities throughout the Alliance; this challenge on Military Mobility is co-organized with the Ministry of Defence of Slovenia. “The Slovenian Armed Forces fully supports all efforts to promote the development of future Allied capabilities, to identify advanced and emerging technologies, and to expand the NATO Innovation Network,” expressed Major General Robert Glavaš, Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces.

The top winners of the NATO Innovation challenge will receive monetary awards, as well as potential support in the development and implementation of relevant solutions. Allied Command Transformation, NATO’s warfare development command, implemented a Framework for Collaborative Interaction to increase opportunities for industry and academia to contribute to initiatives throughout the Alliance. Collaborations such as the NATO Innovation Challenge enable Allied Command Transformation to explore and improve opportunities throughout NATO by engaging with academia, industry, and NATO-wide stakeholders, to ensure that NATO’s Military Instrument of Power meets the future operational needs of the Alliance.
