Diehl Defence has successfully demonstrated a navalised version of its IRIS-T SLM air defence system during the German Navy’s "Maritime Firing Exercise 2025" (MFE) – the service’s largest missile drill in 30 years. The exercise, held under the codename "Andøya", allows naval crews to test complex weapons and procedures in near-operational conditions.

An Anti Air Warfare (AAW) module was developed jointly with the German Navy and installed on the C-Deck of the frigate “Baden-Württemberg” (Type F125) in under ten months from concept to live firing. The test marked the first successful deployment of a navalised IRIS-T SLM variant with a missile from the IRIS-T family.

Having already proven its combat effectiveness in Ukraine, the IRIS-T SLM met all evaluation criteria during the MFE 2025. Diehl Defence confirmed that the system “showcased its well-known qualities also on the high seas and met all the test and trial targets”.

The trial demonstrated the system’s high hit rate and positions the company for further development in naval applications. “Diehl Defence has thus reached the important milestone of having successfully tested a navalized variant of an air defence system with a missile of the IRIS-T family for the first time.”

The results mark a step forward for integrating the system into future naval deployments. As the company noted, “The successful test paves the way for the series introduction of IRIS-T SLM for the navy.”

Diehl Defence reaffirmed its commitment to the German Navy and national defence procurement. “The company thus once again underlines its role as a reliable and long-standing partner of the German Navy and demonstrates its ability to contribute to fast, target-oriented and efficient procurement in Germany.”
