Northrop Grumman says anti-jam PGK E5 enters production to maintain U.S. Army 155 mm artillery accuracy in GPS-degraded environments

Northrop Grumman has begun producing its PGK E5 precision guidance kit for the U.S. Army. The upgraded system is designed to keep 155 mm artillery accurate when electronic warfare degrades GPS signals.

First deliveries are scheduled for early 2028 from the company’s plant in Plymouth, Minnesota. Northrop Grumman did not disclose the contract value or the number of kits ordered.

PGK E5 is the latest version of the M1156 Precision Guidance Kit. It converts existing 155 mm high-explosive rounds into GPS-guided projectiles without requiring a new artillery platform.

The E5 upgrade adds anti-jamming technology to counter emerging electronic threats. It retains the fit, form and user experience of the current PGK, limiting the need for equipment changes or additional training.

Northrop Grumman said the kit recently exceeded the Army’s threshold and objective accuracy requirements during tests in GPS-degraded conditions. Greater precision is intended to reduce the number of rounds required per engagement and limit collateral damage.

The kit is compatible with existing 155 mm projectiles and fielded howitzers. That allows the Army and allied forces to add the new anti-jam capability without changing their main artillery systems.

The program responds to the growing use of GPS jamming on modern battlefields. Northrop Grumman developed the E5 with the Army to preserve precision fires when satellite navigation is unreliable.
