Poland acquires SAR satellites from ICEYE to strengthen defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

ICEYE, a global leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite technology, has signed an agreement with the Ministry of National Defense of Poland to supply three SAR satellites to the Polish Armed Forces. The agreement, valued at approximately €200 million, also includes the option to purchase an additional three satellites and enhanced ground segment capabilities within the next 12 months under the Polish Armed Forces’ MikroSAR program.

The deal marks a significant step for Poland in enhancing its radar reconnaissance capabilities. ICEYE will also collaborate with local industry to develop a mobile Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, which will enable near real-time satellite tasking, data download, and analysis.

Rafał Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE, expressed pride in supporting Poland’s defence efforts, stating: “ICEYE is proud to strengthen defense capabilities in Poland with cutting-edge SAR satellites. Our advanced, operationally proven satellite system provides actionable intelligence for resilience, readiness, and response, and enables informed and rapid decision-making in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.”

ICEYE’s SAR satellites are renowned for their ability to deliver continuous monitoring of points of interest on Earth, regardless of time or weather conditions. The system also supports the potential for shared capacity and cross-tasking with other nations, enhancing collective space defence capabilities among European and allied countries.

The agreement with ICEYE highlights Poland’s strategic focus on technological innovation in defence. Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Poland, noted the significance of the acquisition, saying: “This is a great day for the Polish Armed Forces and Poland, because they are gaining full independence in radar reconnaissance and imaging. Freedom and independence will only be defended by sovereignty and innovation, and the applications of the technology acquired today have military significance, but also economic applications.”

ICEYE currently operates the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation, offering global access and the highest revisit frequency in the market. The company’s satellites, with a resolution of 25 cm, enable precise object detection and situational awareness, making them a critical asset for modern military operations.

The implementation of the agreement begins immediately, reinforcing ICEYE’s position as a leading provider of SAR satellites for both military and civilian purposes. The acquisition is expected to significantly boost Poland’s defence and reconnaissance capabilities, while also offering potential for future collaborations with European and allied nations.
