President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he will attend a major gathering of U.S. military leaders organised by War Secretary Pete Hegseth early this week. The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, is expected to bring together hundreds of generals and admirals.

Speaking to NBC News, Trump characterised the event as a positive occasion. “Really just a very nice meeting talking about how well we’re doing militarily, talking about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things,” he said.

He described the purpose of the gathering as strengthening unity among military leadership. “We have some great people coming in and it’s just an esprit de corps. You know the expression ‘esprit de corps’? That’s all it’s about. We’re talking about what we’re doing, what they’re doing, and how we’re doing,” Trump added.

The Washington Post reported that the order for military leaders to attend went out on short notice and without explanation. Trump’s attendance adds an additional layer of security, with the Secret Service taking charge of the event’s protection.

An official told NBC that the meeting would allow Hegseth to highlight military achievements and outline the Defence Department’s future direction under the Trump administration. The gathering comes amid structural changes in senior ranks and Hegseth’s emphasis on promoting what he calls a “warrior spirit.”

Vice President Vance dismissed speculation about the meeting. “It’s actually not unusual at all and I think it’s odd that you guys have made it into such a big story,” he said.

Trump also defended the event during remarks at the White House. “I think it’s great when generals and top people want to come to the United States to be with our now-secretary of War,” he stated, suggesting that attendees would also be “touring equipment sites” and “talking about the newest weapons.”
