QinetiQ secures U.S. Navy contract renewal for Vindicator II aerial target systems

By Defence Industry Europe

QinetiQ Target Systems (QTS) has been awarded a significant five-year contract to provide uncrewed aerial target (UAV-T) support services to the United States Government (USG). The agreement, worth USD 13.3 million, came into effect last month and is set to run until late 2029, with an option for a six-month extension.

The contract, facilitated through Prime Contractor Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) in partnership with Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), marks the sixth consecutive renewal for QTS’s Medicine Hat facility. It ensures the continued use of the Vindicator II, a reliable training platform extensively used by the United States Navy (USN) at key ranges in San Nicolas Island, California, and Dam Neck, Virginia.

This deal represents the largest deployment of QTS’s uncrewed aerial support services for USG operations to date. The Vindicator II, a pre-qualified aerial target, has been a cost-effective and efficient solution for training needs over multiple contract cycles. Its consistent performance and adaptability to USN requirements underline its value in preparing naval forces for operational challenges.

Under the new framework, QTS will deploy Canadian personnel to deliver services akin to its globally recognised Banshee operations. The equipment and support, however, will be customised to meet the USN’s specific needs, demonstrating QinetiQ’s flexibility and commitment to tailored client solutions.

Ryan Peterson, Project and Customer Account Manager for QinetiQ, expressed pride in the renewal, emphasising the long-standing partnership with the USN. “This contract is a testament to the excellent working relationship between QinetiQ and our USN customer,” he stated. He also highlighted the dedication of QinetiQ’s Global Field Services team, which has delivered outstanding service for over two decades.

This achievement underscores QinetiQ’s innovative approach to uncrewed systems and its ability to adapt to evolving industry demands. The partnership further demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality training and support services that meet the operational challenges faced by its global clients.
