Quantum Systems expands drone production in Ukraine amid high-level talks

By Defence Industry Europe

German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems has confirmed its active participation in German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's recent delegation visit to Ukraine, further solidifying its role in the country's defence and technology sectors. The visit included discussions on expanding Quantum Systems' operations in Ukraine through the establishment of two production facilities.

Chancellor Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Oleksandr Berezhny, Managing Director of Quantum Systems Ukraine, during a demonstration in Kyiv highlighting the latest advancements in drone technology. The talks underscored Quantum Systems’ commitment to localising production and enhancing Ukraine’s capabilities in unmanned aerial systems.

The company’s first Ukrainian production facility, inaugurated in April 2024 by German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, has already begun operations. This site, which includes capabilities for manufacturing up to 1,000 drones annually, spare parts production, and on-site technological advancements, serves as a cornerstone of Quantum Systems’ presence in Ukraine. A second facility is planned, as discussed during the recent delegation visit, further expanding the company’s footprint in the region.

Quantum Systems has been instrumental in Ukraine’s defence efforts since the onset of the conflict with Russia. Since May 2022, it has delivered over 200 Vector reconnaissance drones to the Ukrainian Armed Forces through Germany’s Enablement Initiative, with a total of 500 drones expected by the end of this year. These drones, known for their advanced reconnaissance capabilities, have played a critical role in intelligence and surveillance operations.

In addition to production, Quantum Systems operates a training and support centre in Ukraine, employing 25 local staff who train drone pilots and implement on-site technological upgrades. This commitment ensures that Ukrainian forces remain equipped with the latest innovations, including the Receptor AI module, introduced in July 2024, which enables drone operations in GNSS-denied environments.

The company’s expansion in Ukraine represents an investment of €6 million over two years, with the second facility expected to create 100 jobs by the end of 2024. This move underscores Quantum Systems’ confidence in Ukraine’s resilience and its strategic importance as a hub for drone technology.
