Royal Air Force personnel deployed to Romania under Operation BILOXI are supporting NATO’s 24-hour enhanced Air Policing mission. They are working with Romanian Air Force personnel to help safeguard the Alliance’s eastern flank.

Since arriving in theatre, RAF Typhoon aircraft and supporting personnel have integrated with Romanian partners. The Royal Air Force said the two nations have established a fully interoperable force.

Both air forces are operating as one team, combining experience, capability and shared procedures. The aim is to maintain a responsive and effective air defence posture under NATO arrangements.

At the centre of the mission is a constant state of readiness. RAF and Romanian aircraft maintain a 24-hour Quick Reaction Alert, prepared to respond at any time under NATO command and control arrangements.

The posture is sustained by personnel working around the clock. Their role is to ensure aircraft remain available and ready whenever required.

The RAF said responses are carefully determined based on the specific circumstances of each situation. This allows NATO to deliver a proportionate and effective defence of its airspace.

The mission also includes rotation of assets on standby for Quick Reaction Alert. At different stages of the deployment, either RAF or Romanian aircraft will be held at a shorter readiness state and prepared to respond to threats.

When not held at readiness state, the RAF deployment can focus on other NATO activities and integration. The model is intended to maintain an uninterrupted NATO defensive presence while reinforcing trust, interoperability and shared responsibility between Allies.

“It’s important that we operate as one team under NATO. Whether it’s RAF or Romanian aircraft on alert, we’re working to the same procedures, the same command structure, and ready to respond together as the situation requires,” said Wing Commander Daryl, Detachment Commander.

The RAF deployment is due to continue until August. RAF personnel will remain focused on readiness and on reinforcing NATO’s defensive posture alongside Romanian allies.
