Project Convergence Capstone 6 is focused on validating the Army’s Next Generation Command and Control architecture. The system is designed to move data across warfighting functions and help commanders make faster decisions in high-threat environments.
The architecture uses commercial software, data-management technologies and artificial intelligence to support battlefield decision-making. The Army is testing whether those tools can operate effectively at scale under realistic combat conditions.
“This iteration of Project Convergence is special with the 4th Infantry Division employing NGC2 at the division scale to give commanders the data they need to make more, better, and faster decisions than the enemy, which increases lethality,” said Lt. Gen. Michael McCurry, commanding general of U.S. Army Futures and Concept Command and director of PC-C6. The 4th Infantry Division is using the system during force-on-force operations at Fort Irwin.
The division is operating in rugged terrain and high temperatures against an opposing force equipped with advanced instrumentation and technologies. The Army said those conditions are creating new challenges for the unit as it employs the command architecture at division scale.
PC-C6 also brings together U.S. military forces with allies and partners from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The Army is using the event to test interoperability across joint and multinational formations.
“With approximately 10,000 participants on the ground experimenting with more than 90 technologies, concepts and formations, we are excited to be at Ft. Irwin and work on transforming the Joint and Multinational force,” said Brig. Gen. Daniel Hibner, commanding general of U.S. Army Joint Modernization Command and deputy director of PC-C6. The scale makes this the largest Project Convergence event held so far.
The exercise combines live and simulated experimentation with emerging technologies and operational units. It is designed to bring separate warfighting systems together against common strategic and operational objectives.
The Army said data and lessons collected during the event will help shape its modernization plans. Results from PC-C6 are also expected to inform future acquisition decisions.
Project Convergence serves as an Army-hosted test environment for new technologies before wider operational use. PC-C6 extends that effort to a larger joint and multinational setting while placing the Next Generation Command and Control architecture at the center of the experiment.
