Raytheon, an RTX business, has received a $205 million contract from the U.S. Navy for continued production of the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. The agreement also covers upgrades, conversions, overhauls and associated equipment.

“Phalanx is our Navy’s last line of defense, expertly designed to protect our sailors from the threats they face every day,” said Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon. “Securing this contract underscores the trust the U.S. Navy places in an absolutely critical system.”

The Phalanx system is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled, radar-guided gun designed to defeat anti-ship missiles and other close-in threats that pass earlier layers of defence. It is deployed across all U.S. Navy surface combatant ship classes and on vessels of 24 allied nations.

In January 2024, the Phalanx system was used by the USS Gravely in the Red Sea to destroy a Houthi missile seconds before impact, safeguarding more than 300 sailors on board. The incident highlighted the system’s role in protecting naval personnel during active operations.

Work under the contract will be conducted at facilities in Louisville, Kentucky, and other U.S. sites, with completion scheduled through 2029. RTX stated the agreement reinforces its commitment to supplying the Navy with critical defensive capabilities.
