Rheinmetall demonstrates autonomous logistics technology in the UK

By Defence Industry Europe

Rheinmetall, a leading German defence company, recently showcased its advanced autonomous logistics technology at a demonstration event held at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, UK. The event highlighted cutting-edge leader-follower technology that is poised to enhance battlefield logistics by offering greater flexibility and efficiency.

During the demonstration, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicle (RMMV) HX trucks and Polaris 4×4 MRZR vehicles equipped with autonomous technology were presented to attendees. The technology, which can be integrated into existing and next-generation vehicles, aims to reduce the number of personnel required to operate logistic convoys while increasing the volume of supplies transported. This capability, designed for both day and night operations, will play a critical role in future force logistics, particularly for NATO forces.

The event featured a live demonstration, with an RMMV HX truck acting as the “leader” vehicle, and three following vehicles equipped with wireless “A” and “B” kits that allowed them to autonomously connect and follow the convoy. Guests observed the vehicles seamlessly navigating various terrains, including tarmac roads, prepared tracks, and off-road areas, as well as challenging environments like dense woodlands, steep gradients, and sharp bends. The smooth operation across these diverse conditions highlighted the system’s resilience and adaptability.

One of the key benefits of the leader-follower technology is the ability to operate logistic convoys with fewer personnel, significantly reducing the risks faced by soldiers on the battlefield. The technology is compatible with many trucks already in service with NATO countries, making it a readily deployable solution for modern military operations.

Rheinmetall’s success in the European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) 2024 competition further underscores the effectiveness of its autonomous logistics technology. The company’s InterRoc team took first place in the “Automated Convoy” category, demonstrating the capability of the HX truck equipped with the PATH autonomy kit.
