Rocket Lab wins $397 million U.S. Space Force contract to build and launch Flatellites for real-time airborne threat tracking

Rocket Lab has won a $397 million U.S. Space Force contract for a new airborne target-tracking constellation. The company will build, launch and operate multiple Flatellites under the SB-AMTI program.

The spacecraft will carry advanced sensors and high-bandwidth communications links. They will provide real-time data on airborne threats in contested environments.

Rocket Lab will launch the satellites aboard its upcoming Neutron rocket. It will operate the spacecraft from secure facilities and provide tracking data to the Space Force.

The contract includes an option for additional Flatellites within its total value. Rocket Lab did not disclose the number of satellites covered by the award.

SB-AMTI stands for Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator. The program is led by the Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Space-Based Sensing and Targeting.

The architecture will combine satellites, secure communications and ground processing systems. Artificial intelligence will filter large data streams and help identify moving targets.

The program seeks to provide persistent surveillance from orbit. It also aims to reduce reliance on vulnerable airborne sensing aircraft.

Traditional surveillance platforms face growing risks in contested airspace. Advanced anti-access and area-denial systems can limit their ability to operate near hostile forces.

Rocket Lab said its Flatellites are optimized for deployment in large constellations. The company’s Neutron launch service will also expand vendor diversity within the program.

The award covers spacecraft development, launch and mission operations. It reflects Rocket Lab’s strategy of controlling several parts of the space mission supply chain.

“We are proud to contribute to the deployment of a resilient space-based sensing layer that will enhance the Joint Force’s ability to operate in contested airspace.” Rocket Lab said its integrated model supports rapid delivery of military space systems.

The company handles satellite design, manufacturing, launch and on-orbit operations. Those capabilities will be used across the SB-AMTI contract.

Rocket Lab has previously supported the Space Force and National Reconnaissance Office. It has also conducted missions for DARPA and NASA.

The latest award expands Rocket Lab’s role in U.S. military sensing and targeting programs. It also gives the Neutron rocket a central role in deploying the planned tracking architecture.
