Spain hands over more Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks to Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

On July 15, the Spanish Ministry of Defence announced it has sent a new batch of arms and military equipment to Ukraine. The shipment includes 10 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks, which will enhance the combat capability of Ukrainian land forces as they continue defensive operations against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in several directions in the east of the country.

According to a statement published by the Spanish Ministry of Defence, the new batch of materiel support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine includes, besides the Leopard 2A4 tanks, a large number of anti-tank missiles.

The Ministry said that before the transfer to Ukraine, the Leopard 2A4 tanks were maintained and overhauled by the Spanish industry. The work was conducted at the Santa Bárbara Sistemas facility (a subsidiary of General Dynamics European Land Systems) in Alcalá de Guadaira.

This is the second batch of Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks that Spain has transferred to the Ukrainian army. The first shipment also included ten tanks.

Since 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have received approximately 90 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks. According to declarations by Western governments, it is expected that the Ukrainian army will receive an additional several dozen tanks (approximately 90) in the future.
