While further details are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that these aircraft will progressively replace the currently operational TYPHOON Tranche 1 models. The new jets are expected to meet the Next Generation (NG) standard, featuring a range of advanced technologies. These include a new Large Area Display (LAD), a next-generation mission computer, high-performance AESA CAPTOR-E Mk2 (ECRS Mk2) radar, an updated electronic self-protection system, and capabilities for controlling and managing so-called loyal wingman drones.
Beyond the specifics of the aircraft configuration, which will be revealed in due course, this acquisition represents a strategically significant contract. It aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the Italian Air Force (AM), serve as a bridge towards the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), and sustain production volumes at the Leonardo Aircraft facility in Caselle.
