Sweden contributes SEK 300 million to Romania for replenishing Patriot systems donated to Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

The Swedish government has pledged SEK 300 million (EUR 26 million) to support Romania in replenishing its Patriot air defence systems donated to Ukraine. This funding aims to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence while ensuring Romania maintains its own security capabilities.

The contribution is part of the Immediate Action on Air Defence (IAAD) project, a Germany-led initiative to provide Ukraine with air defence systems and financial support to countries donating such equipment. Sweden joined the project in autumn 2024, reinforcing its commitment to collective European defence efforts.

Romania will use the funds to replace key components of its Patriot system, including missiles, sensors, and other critical equipment. The donation highlights Sweden’s recognition of Romania’s substantial contribution to Ukraine’s defence in 2024.

The funding comes from previously announced aid packages for Ukraine. By participating in IAAD, Sweden supports both Ukraine’s resistance against ongoing aggression and the readiness of its allies in maintaining robust defence capabilities.
