Australia to transfer RBS 70 NG air defence systems to Ukraine

During a recent visit to Lviv, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed that Australia will provide Ukraine witha new USD 100 million defence aid package. This package includes the transfer of short-range RBS 70 NG air defence systems from the Australian Army, valued at approximately USD 50 million.

The aid package also includes USD 32.5 million for the procurement of drones as part of a broader initiative sponsored by the United Kingdom and Latvia, along with additional equipment for soldiers such as helmets, boots, generators, and rigid inflatable boats.

Details on the number of RBS 70 NG launchers and munitions to be delivered, as well as whether additional items like the Giraffe AMB air defense radars from Swedish company Saab will be provided, have not yet been disclosed.

The RBS 70 NG system, developed by Sweden’s Saab in 2011, is an upgraded variant of the RBS 70 air defence system. It is capable of engaging air targets such as drones, helicopters, and aircraft with laser-guided missiles, both day and night. It has a maximum range of 8,000 to 9,000 meters and can reach altitudes up to 5,000 meters, featuring enhancements like an improved targeting system, integration with a thermal camera, automatic target tracking, and simplified operator training.
