Sweden procures VIKING uncrewed ground vehicle for autonomous military programme

By Defence Industry Europe

Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has acquired the VIKING Uncrewed Ground Vehicle (UGV) from Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) as part of its Autonomous Multifunctional Ground Vehicle Demonstrator Programme (DAMM). The procurement aims to explore the integration of autonomous systems into Sweden’s military operations, with the VIKING platform playing a central role in experimentation and development.

Alongside the UGV, FMV has also secured a Command and Control Basestation from IDV, ensuring effective operational control and coordination of the platform. Additionally, IDV will provide continuous technical support for system integration, modifications, and future upgrades throughout the project.

The VIKING UGV is equipped with IDV’s AI-based MACE autonomy stack, which enables advanced autonomous capabilities. The vehicle’s modular design allows it to fulfil multiple battlefield roles, including logistics, reconnaissance, surveillance, combat support, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defence.

As part of the agreement, the demonstrator vehicle will be delivered to Sweden with accompanying technical documentation, software manuals, and training. This section of the contract is valued at over £540,000, with optional provisions worth an additional £100,000 covering spare parts, maintenance, and other services.

The DAMM programme is a key component of Sweden’s broader Future of Technology (FoT) Marksystem initiative, which aims to procure and evaluate four different UGVs between 2024 and 2026. In December 2024, FMV acquired the German-made Mission Master UGV from Rheinmetall, marking a strategic step towards testing and analysing the roles autonomous systems can play within Sweden’s armed forces.
