Sweden signs contract with KNDS to modernise 110 Stridsvagn 122 main battle tanks

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with the German-French defence company KNDS for the repair and modernisation of 110 Stridsvagn 122 tanks. These tanks, originally developed to Swedish specifications based on the Leopard 2A5, will be upgraded to the Stridsvagn 123 A (Leopard 2A8) standard.

The work on the modernisation of the Stridsvagn 122 fleet has already begun. By 2031, the Swedish Army will receive a total of 154 modern Stridsvagn 123 tanks in A and B variants.

In addition to the upgrade contract, FMV signed a separate agreement with KNDS in January 2025 for the delivery of 44 new Leopard 2A8 tanks. These new tanks, designated Stridsvagn 123 B, are adapted to Swedish requirements and include the replacement of ten vehicles previously donated by Sweden to Ukraine.

Deliveries of the modernised Stridsvagn 123 A tanks are scheduled to begin in 2027 and will continue until 2031. The newly built Stridsvagn 123 B tanks are expected to begin arriving in 2028, with final delivery also set for 2031.

The Stridsvagn 123 A modernisation includes the replacement of almost all electronic components, aligning the systems with those of the Leopard 2A8. Key upgrades involve a new combat control system, gunner and commander sights, and a night vision device for the driver.

Both Stridsvagn 123 A and B variants will receive the Rheinmetall Rh-120/L55A1 120mm gun, equipped with an ammunition programming system and improved ballistics through its extended 55-calibre barrel. While the new 123 B variant will feature an entirely new chassis, engine and transmission, the upgraded 123 A will retain the existing drivetrain from the Stridsvagn 122.
