“With this decision, together with our Portuguese and Swedish partners, we are now in a position to provide one mixed Ukrainian battalion,” Germany’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement. “Together with Poland, an initiative was launched to provide Ukraine with two battalions of Leopard 2 main battle tanks.”
As Defence Industry Europe reported on Friday, the government of Sweden announced that it will send “up to 10” Leopard 2A5 tanks to Ukraine. In addition, Portugal declared that it will donate three Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine.
In total, this will give Ukraine one mixed battalion of 31 tanks (Leopard 2A6/Leopard 2A5).
Delivery of another battalion of Leopard 2A4 tanks is coordinated by Poland. On Friday (February 24), Warsaw announced it has already delivered to Ukraine first from Leopard 2A4 tanks from Polish Armed Forces’ stock.
