Germany and France progress with MGCS programme

The Main Ground Combat Systems (MGCS) programme is set to break new ground by transcending the traditional boundaries of a tank.

On 24 August, La Tribune reported that France and Italy agreed on proposing to Germany Rome’s inclusion, represented by Leonardo, a prominent Italian defence company, in the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) programme.

The French daily La Tribune reported on the efforts of the French authorities to include Italy in the MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) programme.

On 10 July of this year, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu met in Berlin to discuss the advancement of the long-planned MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) project. The two ministers reinforced the willingness of their respective governments to push forward with the joint procurement of a new generation tank capable of integrating the technologies and characteristics needed on the battlefield of the future, drawing from the lessons of the ongoing Ukrainian war (“Berlin and Paris vow to press ahead with long-delayed joint tank venture”. The cooperation between the two countries on the MGCS tanks was part of a larger package of joint procurements agreed upon between Macron and Merkel's administrations in January 2019. It included a fighter jet (FCAS), an armed drone, artillery systems and a maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

French Minister of Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, and German Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, announced the current progress of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) programme.

The Planning Office of the German Armed Forces has awarded Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, Quantum-Systems GmbH and Spleenlab GmbH with a research endeavor to demonstrate and analyze the AI building blocks required for swarms of tactical UAS in a real-world scenario. The project, titled KITU 2 (Künstliche Intelligenz für taktische UAS; Artificial Intelligence for tactical UAS), is funded by the German Ministry of Defence. The focus of the study is on the effectiveness of tactical UAS. The partnership enables each company to leverage and bring in its key strengths.
