Thales and Bharat Dynamics Ltd to supply Man Portable Air Defence Systems to India

By Defence Industry Europe

Thales and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) have signed an agreement for the initial supply of Laser Beam Riding Man Portable Air Defence systems (LBRM) to the Indian Ministry of Defence. This deal follows a 2021 partnership agreement between Thales and BDL, backed by both the Indian and UK governments, to enhance India’s air defence capabilities.

The LBRM system, incorporating High Velocity Missiles (STARStreak), is a Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) solution designed to counter modern airborne threats. These systems will improve India’s national security with advanced, countermeasure-resistant technology.

Under the agreement, up to 60% of the LBRM system will be manufactured in India, supporting the country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The portable air defence system is optimised for neutralising fixed-wing aircraft, attack helicopters, and drones.

The first batch of these missiles and launchers will be delivered in 2025, marking the first instance of India acquiring this cutting-edge VSHORAD capability. The collaboration lays the foundation for a long-term manufacturing and technology transfer partnership between Thales and BDL.

Thales has reaffirmed its commitment to transferring proven air defence capabilities to India, strengthening the Indian Armed Forces. The agreement also represents a significant step under the UK-India Defence Partnership initiative, designed to remove trade barriers and facilitate government-to-government defence contracts.

A production partnership with India will also boost UK manufacturing, particularly at Thales’ Belfast site, where the LBRM system is designed. The agreement underscores the UK’s strategic defence relationship with India, benefiting both nations economically and technologically.

Lord Vernon Coaker, UK Minister of State for Defence, highlighted the partnership as a key milestone in strengthening bilateral defence ties. Pascale Sourisse, CEO of Thales International, described the agreement as a crucial step in advancing India’s air defence strategy and aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Cmde A Madhavarao (retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of BDL, stated that the collaboration enhances India’s defence ecosystem and aligns with national policies on self-reliance and ease of doing business. Phil Siveter, CEO of Thales UK, also emphasised the significance of the agreement in bringing advanced air defence capabilities to India.

The STARStreak missile system is the fastest in its class, reaching speeds over Mach 3, and is designed to counter late-unmasking threats, including fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, and drones. Thales, a leading provider of complex weapon systems, has been a trusted defence partner for over 60 years.
