The protection system combines Leonardo’s Miysis Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) and MAIR threat warning technology. This pairing allows for the detection, tracking, and neutralisation of multiple incoming missile threats simultaneously, providing enhanced safety and operational flexibility.
Miysis DIRCM has demonstrated a 100% success rate in live trials against all missile targets, including modern and legacy infrared-guided threats. Once installed, it requires no maintenance, offering customers reduced through-life costs and operational efficiency.
Infrared missiles, such as Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS), remain a critical threat to aviation, particularly in conflict zones. Leonardo’s Miysis DIRCM is already trusted to protect high-value assets operated by the Royal Air Force and other NATO and Middle Eastern customers.
MAIR complements the system by using infrared cameras to detect and track missile heat signatures. It then passes this data to Miysis DIRCM, which deploys a high-powered laser to disrupt the missile’s tracking capabilities, ensuring the aircraft’s safety.
Leonardo’s platform protection system is versatile, compatible with a wide range of aircraft from helicopters to wide-body jets. Its compact and lightweight design allows for discrete installation without compromising aircraft performance or existing systems.
