thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) marked two major achievements on November 12, 2024, with the launch of the INS Drakon submarine and the commencement of production on the first Class Dakar submarine for the Israeli Defence Forces. The event, held in Kiel, Germany, signifies a significant step forward in the longstanding collaboration between tkMS and the Israeli Navy.

The INS Drakon is the third and final submarine of the HDW Class Dolphin AIP series, custom-designed for the Israeli Navy. This launch, attended by dignitaries from both Germany and Israel, further strengthens the defence partnership between the two nations.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, expressed the importance of this milestone for both tkMS and its international partnerships. “With Israel, we share a long-standing partnership built on trust and mutual respect. The launching of INS Drakon and the start of production for the first Class Dakar submarine are major milestones that underscore our commitment to delivering submarines that set new technical standards globally,” Burkhard stated.

Burkhard also highlighted tkMS’s capabilities in delivering cutting-edge naval solutions, noting, “As a ‘Maritime Powerhouse’ we bring together our full spectrum of capabilities – from electronics, to design, to platform integration. The start of production for this submarine marks a new chapter in our collaboration, strengthening our partnership with Israel and further proving the world-class expertise of our teams.”

The INS Drakon is the latest example of tkMS’s advanced Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) submarines, known globally for their technical innovation, reliability, and operational efficiency. Meanwhile, the start of production on the first Class ‘DAKAR’ submarine signals a continuation of this successful collaboration and sets the stage for future developments.
