Triton Depth raises €1 million pre-seed round to develop passive acoustic sensor network for Europe’s underwater security and maritime intelligence

Danish defencetech startup Triton Depth has raised a €1 million pre-seed round led by EIFO and The Creator Fund to develop underwater monitoring technology. The company is building systems designed to detect and classify activity below the sea surface, including drones and other uncrewed platforms.

The Copenhagen-based company said the funding comes as hybrid threats are increasingly moving underwater. It cited rapidly developing underwater drone warfare, sabotage of subsea cables in the Baltic Sea, undersea mines disrupting energy supplies in Hormuz, and covert vessels operating without transponders or with false location data.

Triton Depth is developing a scalable network of passive acoustic sensors intended to monitor underwater environments continuously and discreetly. The system is designed to help authorities and infrastructure operators detect potential threats and respond before activity goes unnoticed.

Governments and critical infrastructure operators are under growing pressure to improve awareness around coastal and subsea assets, from the Baltic Sea to the Arctic. Denmark and the wider Nordic region are emerging as important markets because of their strategic geography, rising defence spending and tighter requirements around maritime security and critical infrastructure.

“At a time when Europe needs to build stronger capabilities in critical defence technologies, underwater awareness is becoming a strategic necessity,” said Sara Sande, Managing Director, Partner and Head of Thematic Venture investments at EIFO. “Triton Depth is tackling a real and unresolved problem with a solution that is both technically ambitious and highly relevant to strengthening Denmark’s security and Europe’s resilience.”

The company’s system is built around small autonomous sensors known as Triton Nodes. These nodes are designed for long-duration missions with minimal maintenance and can be deployed across the seabed and within the water column.

Once activated, an onboard AI model analyses acoustic signatures in real time. The system classifies the type of vessel or object and sends operators actionable alerts when it identifies potential threats.

The nodes are intended to form a distributed network that can cover large areas and support triangulation. Triton Depth describes the approach as a persistent tripwire effect that is resilient against single points of failure.

“This investment allows us to accelerate development of our sensor network, expand deployments and build the large-scale dataset needed to improve detection and classification,” said Carl Borg, CEO and Co-Founder of Triton Depth. “Longer term, we aim to build the intelligence layer for the ocean – helping both defence and civilian operators understand what is happening below the surface.”

The Creator Fund said the market is being shaped by threats to subsea infrastructure, the rise of stealth underwater drones and increasing demand for maritime intelligence. It said Triton Depth is working on the infrastructure needed to monitor ocean activity at scale.

Triton Depth is building the infrastructure needed to monitor the ocean at scale – and could ultimately become the data layer for maritime activity in Europe.”

“The winning company in this space will be the one that builds the strongest acoustic data advantage. Triton Depth has already shown an ability to deploy quickly, gather data and iterate – which is critical in a market like this,” Macfarlane said.

Triton Depth was founded in 2025 by Carl Borg, Markus Rytter and Frederik Himmer, engineers who met while studying at the Technical University of Denmark. The company is focused on technologies that improve underwater awareness and maritime intelligence around ports, critical infrastructure and maritime environments.
