U.S. Air Force F-35A crashes at Eielson Air Force Base, pilot safely ejects

By Defence Industry Europe

An F-35A Lightning II fighter jet of the United States Air Force (USAF) crashed within the perimeter of Eielson Air Force Base (EIL) in Alaska on 28 January 2025. The incident occurred at 12:49 p.m. local time during the aircraft’s approach to the base.

The aircraft, assigned to the 354th Fighter Wing, went down inside the base’s fenced-off area. The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and was transported to Bassett Army Hospital for medical evaluation.

Emergency response teams were dispatched immediately to the crash site to ensure safety and secure the area. Authorities have not reported any injuries or damage to structures within the base.

Colonel Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, reaffirmed the USAF’s commitment to safety and thorough investigative procedures. “Our people are our most important resource, and we are committed to ensuring their safety and security,” he stated.

The cause of the crash remains undetermined, with an official investigation currently underway. As a precaution, all air operations at Eielson Air Force Base have been temporarily halted due to the closure of its only runway.

Eielson Air Force Base plays a key role in North American aerospace defence, given its strategic position within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). This airspace is frequently monitored due to the presence of Russian military aircraft.
