U.S. approves sale of EA-37B electronic attack system to Italy

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. State Department has approved the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Italy of the EA-37B Electronic Attack Mission System, as announced on October 7. This approval follows two years after the Italian Ministry of Defence first expressed interest in acquiring the advanced Electronic Attack system to equip its Gulfstream G-550 aircraft.

According to the notice released by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), Italy has requested to purchase the EA-37B mission system, which includes a range of non-Major Defence Equipment. This package features Network Centric Collaborative Targeting (NCCT) systems, System Control and Monitoring subsystems, Radio Frequency Receiver (RFR) subsystems, Software-defined Radio (SDR) subsystems, and a Counter Radar Assembly. Additional components include Array Panels, AN/ARC-210 RT-2036 radios, KG-250 In-line Network Encryptors, KY-100 Narrow/wideband Terminals, KIV-77 Mode 4/5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), and AN/PYQ-10C Simple Key Loaders.

The program also encompasses training, support, spare parts, maintenance, and technical documentation. While the specific quantities of each component were not disclosed, Italy has previously indicated plans to integrate this technology into two Gulfstream G-550 aircraft. The estimated value of this sale is USD 680 million (approximately EUR 620 million). BAE Systems, based in Hudson, New Hampshire, has been designated as the principal contractor for this deal.

“The proposed sale will enhance Italy’s ability to address current and future threats by improving interoperability with the United States Air Force (USAF) and disrupting enemy command and control communications during overseas contingency operations,” stated the DSCA notice.

Italy will become the first foreign nation to acquire the highly advanced Compass Call system, joining an elite group of operators with a proven, state-of-the-art Electronic Attack capability. This acquisition reinforces Italy’s role as a critical partner in NATO, capable of contributing to international security and stability.
