U.S. Central Command and UAE form first bilateral military AI task force to accelerate defense applications in Middle East

U.S. Central Command and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to establish a bilateral task force focused on accelerating military artificial intelligence applications. CENTCOM announced the agreement on July 28, marking a new step in U.S.-Emirati defense technology cooperation.

The initiative, named Task Force Talon Synapse, is scheduled to formally launch in the coming weeks. The Abu Dhabi-based unit will comprise about 20 American and Emirati personnel specializing in AI, data and cybersecurity.

The task force will focus on integrating AI applications into intelligence support and critical infrastructure protection. Its work will also cover monitoring of the regional security environment, according to CENTCOM.

“This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command. “Together, we and our Emirati partners share a strong commitment to adopting AI applications that will foster innovation at speed and scale.”

The agreement follows discussions between Cooper and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan last year. The two officials discussed the possibility of establishing a dedicated bilateral AI task force.

CENTCOM advanced the initiative during a regional visit last month. U.S. officials met with AI industry leaders and Emirati defense officials as preparations for the task force moved forward.

Task Force Talon Synapse will bring U.S. and Emirati specialists together in a permanent team based in Abu Dhabi. Its mandate will center on moving AI applications into military and security missions more rapidly.
