L3Harris Technologies has received the green light from the U.S. Navy for its prototype design plans for the next-generation electronic warfare (EW) system set to be integrated into the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft. This milestone marks a significant advancement in equipping naval aviators with cutting-edge defensive technologies.

In recent developments, L3Harris successfully completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for its Advanced Electronic Warfare (ADVEW) system prototype. This system is designed to furnish F/A-18 jets with state-of-the-art countermeasures, crucial for mission success in an environment where threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The company is now gearing up for Prototype System Integration Lab Testing, scheduled to begin this summer.

The successful PDR is part of an $80 million contract with the U.S. Navy, enhancing L3Harris’ two-decade history of delivering advanced EW systems for the F/A-18. This legacy includes the integration of the Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures (IDECM) AN/ALQ-214 on-board jammer (OBJ), a critical component that protects aircraft and crews from advanced radio frequency (RF) threats and sophisticated integrated air defense systems.

L3Harris’ electronic warfare solutions are already operational on today’s F/A-18 aircraft. The IDECM AN/ALQ-214 system, a pivotal part of this integration, has earned L3Harris more than $2 billion in awards from the Naval Air Systems Command for its development and production.

As threats evolve, the ADVEW system represents a significant leap forward in maintaining the U.S. Navy’s technological edge, ensuring that naval aviators remain ahead of emerging threats and out of harm’s way. L3Harris’ ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence continues to fortify the defense capabilities of the F/A-18 fleet, paving the way for future advancements in electronic warfare technology.
