Ukraine and Latvia discuss opportunities for joint drone manufacturing

By Defence Industry Europe

Ukraine and Latvia are exploring the potential for closer cooperation in the defence sector, focusing on joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The discussions took place during a meeting in Kyiv between Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, and the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa.

The talks centred on strengthening ties between the two nations in 2025, particularly in the area of drone technology. Latvia, a leading member of the international Drone Coalition, plays an active role in advancing UAV innovation and partnerships. The Coalition recently outlined its strategy through 2027 at a Ramstein format meeting, highlighting plans for continued collaboration among member states.

One key proposal during the meeting was the establishment of joint ventures to manufacture UAVs, including long-range drones. Defence Minister Umerov suggested that frozen Russian assets could be a potential source of funding for this initiative, underscoring the strategic importance of developing Ukraine’s UAV sector.

The discussions also addressed the broader goal of improving Ukraine’s air defence systems. Minister Umerov thanked Latvia for its comprehensive support, describing it as consistent and valuable. He noted Latvia’s ongoing efforts to advocate for Ukraine on international platforms and within Europe.

The Latvian delegation provided updates on recent legislative changes aimed at enhancing its defence industry. These reforms are intended to facilitate stronger cooperation with Ukraine in both manufacturing and technology development.

“Latvia continues to be a reliable partner in advancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities,” said Minister Umerov. “Their support—political, military, and financial—has consistently produced meaningful results.”
