The U.S. Department of War and Japan’s Ministry of Defense have formalised a project arrangement establishing the Strategic Advancement of Mutual Runtime Assurance Artificial Intelligence (SAMURAI) initiative. Signed on 22 September, the agreement sets a framework for cooperative research and development on Runtime Assurance (RTA) technology.

RTA provides artificial intelligence-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles with the ability to monitor their own performance and ensure safe operation. Findings from the project are expected to inform future integration of AI-equipped UAVs with next-generation fighter aircraft.

The initiative is designed to improve operational safety, strengthen interoperability, and enhance the overall capabilities of the U.S.-Japan Alliance.
