United States approves possible $3.4 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Peru amid tender process

By Defence Industry Europe

Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS) has successfully completed Operational Assessment flight testing on U.S. Air Force F-16 aircraft. The achievement marks a significant milestone in the system’s development and opens the door for potential production and fielding by the Air Force.

On 15 September, the US Department of State announced the approval of a request from the Peruvian authorities regarding a potential purchase of Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Fighting Falcon Block 70 multirole fighter aircraft. The request is linked to Peru’s ongoing tender for next-generation combat aircraft, with the American offer being one of several under consideration.

The approved package, with a maximum value of $3.4 billion, includes twelve F-16C/D Block 70 aircraft along with two spare F110-GE-129 engines, twelve AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, spare AN/APG-83 radar stations and GPS/INS navigation systems. It also covers twelve AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles, CATM-9X and CATM-120 training models, logistical and training support services, spare parts and ground equipment.

If selected, Peru could become the first operator of Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Fighting Falcon Block 70/72 aircraft in South America. Lockheed Martin has already signed production contracts for Bahrain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Taiwan, Turkey and Morocco, while promotional efforts are ongoing in Peru, Vietnam and the Philippines.

According to reports, a decision in the Peruvian tender may be reached later this year. It is also noted that the total number of contracted F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft could surpass 200 units in the coming months.
