Viasat to equip Embraer C-390 aircraft with advanced dual-band SATCOM terminals

By Defence Industry Europe

Viasat Inc., a leader in satellite communications, has announced its collaboration with Embraer to provide dual-band, global aero terminals for the Embraer C-390 Millennium military aircraft. This partnership will see Viasat's Hybrid SATCOM Approach (HSA) integrated into the C-390, boosting communication capabilities through the GAT-5530 terminal, also known as KuKarray.

The integration aims to enhance operational awareness and improve data throughput, enabling resilient connectivity and interoperability for the C-390’s diverse missions. Viasat’s HSA will support Automated Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency (APACE) communication plans, facilitating secure and reliable communication across multiple operational domains.

Viasat and Embraer’s joint efforts focus on creating a robust SATCOM solution that adapts to evolving mission requirements. The open architecture of the HSA allows for flexible integration, providing multi-band, multi-orbit connectivity that is adaptable to both Viasat’s proprietary networks and third-party or government SATCOM systems, including the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) network.

The dual-band capability (Ku/Ka) offered by Viasat’s terminals will ensure seamless transitions between high-capacity Ka-band and global Ku-band satellite networks. This will expand the operational scope of the C-390, allowing access to government and military networks, including Mil-Ka, thereby enhancing its global mission capabilities.

Victor Farah, Senior Vice President of Viasat Government Solutions and Services, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, saying, “Viasat is excited to expand its relationship with Embraer and deliver a hybrid SATCOM solution on the C-390 Millennium platform. Our Hybrid SATCOM Approach design supports advanced airborne connectivity for defence customers seeking reliable, resilient satellite communications in contested environments.”

Frederico Lemos, Chief Commercial Officer for Embraer Defense & Security, expressed the alignment of this integration with Embraer’s mission, noting, “The C-390 offers interoperability and multi-mission capability off-the-shelf, and Embraer is consistently working to expand the envelope. The selection of Viasat’s hybrid satcom terminal is totally aligned with our vision to deliver reliable global connectivity and PACE communication to the end-users as these are important capabilities the customers reference in the mission requirements and a key differentiator for our aircraft.”

The C-390 Millennium is known for its versatility, supporting various operations including logistical, humanitarian, and medical missions. With Viasat’s HSA solution, the aircraft’s operational capability is set to be strengthened, providing reliable broadband connectivity and allowing for potential future integrations of communication systems compatible with LEO and L-Band frequencies.
