Austria to join European Sky Shield Initiative

Raytheon Technologies was awarded a $1.2 billion foreign military sales contract from the U.S. Army to provide Switzerland with the Patriot air defence system. With the sale, Switzerland becomes the 18th global Patriot partner and the eighth European country to choose the system as the backbone of their air defence.

Austria intends to join the European Sky Shield Initiative, a pan-European air and missile defence project led by Germany. Confidential negotiations have been going on for weeks to make this accession possible.

“The threat situation has increased massively as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine,” says Austrian Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer. “We must and will take precautions to protect our country from the threat of drone or missile attacks. In airspace surveillance, the best way is to work together in a European association with other countries.”

“For Austria, this is a milestone in the history of defense policy,” explains Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner. “Negotiations are currently underway to examine this cooperation and to clarify how Austria’s participation in this project can look like in concrete terms.”
