Hanwha Aerospace and General Atomics announce strategic partnership on unmanned aircraft systems

By Defence Industry Europe

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is supporting a demonstration that began in March and is featuring two U.S. Army-owned Gray Eagle Extended Range (GE-ER) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). GA-ASI – the developer of the GE-ER platform – was contracted by the Army to integrate and operate an array of new capabilities on the versatile UAS platform as part of an ongoing effort to modernize GE-ER for Multi-Domain Operations (MDO).

Hanwha Aerospace has joined forces with U.S.-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to co-develop and manufacture Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for the global defence market. The new partnership aims to strengthen technological cooperation and expand capabilities in a rapidly growing sector.

The collaboration builds on the success of a 2024 flight demonstration, where a GA-ASI MQ-1C Gray Eagle STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) UAS was launched from the Republic of Korea Navy’s amphibious landing ship, ROKS Dokdo. Conducted off the coast of Pohang, South Korea, the test showcased the system’s ability to operate from various aircraft-capable naval platforms.

“This demonstration illustrated the ability of the Gray Eagle STOL to operate on many types of aircraft-capable ships, opening numerous new ways for the U.S. and its allies to support multi-domain operations,” GA-ASI stated. The successful flight underlined the platform’s versatility and potential role in joint maritime operations.

Dong Kwan Kim, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Group, highlighted the significance of the collaboration for South Korea’s defence ambitions. “Hanwha Aerospace views unmanned systems as a strategic pillar for the future of defence. Through our collaboration with GA-ASI, we aim to strengthen sovereign defence capabilities, expand Korea’s presence in the global UAS market, and contribute to a more robust ROK-US alliance,” he said.

GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue also welcomed the partnership, referring to the 2024 demonstration as a promising step forward. “We’re excited to extend and deepen our business relationship with Hanwha,” he said. “Our test flight with Gray Eagle STOL was well-received by the Republic of Korea Navy and we know Hanwha is ready to invest to grow a UAS business with GA-ASI in Korea and the U.S.”
