Polish defence company WB Group has begun the production of its FlyEye unmanned aerial systems in Ukraine. The decision responds to increased demand from Ukraine’s armed forces for advanced reconnaissance platforms, already proven in combat conditions.

FlyEye, developed by Flytronic, a WB Group subsidiary, has been in use in Ukraine for a decade. The first systems were delivered in 2015 and remain among the few Western drones formally introduced into the equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Ukraine’s forces are some of the largest users of the FlyEye platform, which has been repeatedly tested under high-intensity conflict. Despite intensive use on the front line, the system maintains one of the highest survival rates during missions.

At the start of 2025, production began in one of the facilities of WB Ukraine, a subsidiary established in the late 2010s. The company employs specialists with unique combat experience in operating unmanned systems in high-intensity conflict.

Initially, WB Ukraine provided servicing, repairs and spare parts for FlyEye. For several months, however, the subsidiary has been delivering complete systems while working closely with other WB Group entities on operation, knowledge exchange and development.

The FlyEye is an electrically powered motor glider with a tractor propeller and low logistical requirements, carried in just two backpacks. It does not need specialist equipment for launch or landing, taking off by hand and landing automatically in confined areas.

The drone is simple to operate, resilient in combat and capable of long flights. Its battery power is used only for take-off and altitude adjustments, while the aircraft glides silently for the remainder of the mission, making it harder to detect by radar.

FlyEye also features an interchangeable mission module, allowing operators to equip it with a day and thermal imaging camera head, a thermal head, an observation head, a retransmission kit or other specialist equipment.

For security reasons, and due to intensified attacks on Ukraine’s defence industry infrastructure, the production launch had not been disclosed until recently.

FlyEye has long been a core component of reconnaissance capabilities within the Polish Armed Forces, with Special Forces being the first users. The system remains in service and is exported to military customers across Europe and Asia, making it one of the most widely produced drones in its class.

WB Group is a leading Polish supplier of advanced solutions for armed forces and uniformed services worldwide. Its portfolio includes command and communication systems, public safety technologies, transport and e-conversion solutions, as well as other unmanned systems such as FT-5 and the Warmate loitering munitions family.
