Joint Task Force-Gold will be co-located with USASMDC at Peterson Space Force Base to align leadership, planning, and operational execution. NORTHCOM said the command is designed to improve coordination across the homeland air and missile defense mission by bringing together key authorities and capabilities.
USASMDC is the Army’s force modernization proponent and operational integrator for global space, missile defense, and high-altitude capabilities. It serves as an Army Service Component Command to U.S. Space Command, supports NORTHCOM’s ground-based midcourse defense mission, and also provides forces and capabilities to U.S. Strategic Command.
The command oversees approximately 2,300 Soldiers and civilians operating across 13 time zones and 11 countries, unified by a mission to defend the nation and its allies. Its major subordinate elements include the 100th Missile Defense Brigade, which operates the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, and the 1st Space Brigade, which conducts space force enhancement and space control operations in support of combatant commanders.
USASMDC also includes a Technical Center that manages research, development, and testing for space, missile defense, directed energy, hypersonic, and related technologies. In addition, the Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence is responsible for future force design, modernization, and training, ensuring the Army’s space and missile defense capabilities continue to evolve in support of homeland defense and integrated deterrence.
