The company said the public-private project would rank among the largest integrated AI and energy infrastructure efforts in the United States. The power system would initially use natural gas, with a planned transition path toward advanced nuclear energy.
“Artificial intelligence, energy resilience, and national security are becoming increasingly interconnected, creating new opportunities to strengthen America’s strategic advantage,” said John Heller, Chief Executive Officer of Amentum. “Amentum is uniquely positioned at that intersection, combining deep engineering expertise, trusted mission execution, and decades of partnership with the U.S. government.”
“This agreement gives us the opportunity to partner with the NNSA to deliver infrastructure that will help power the technologies shaping our nation’s future,” Heller said. His comments frame the project as part of a wider push to connect secure computing capacity with reliable energy supply.
Amentum said AI growth is increasing demand for resilient and secure power infrastructure. The proposed Savannah River project is designed to expand domestic AI computing capacity while adding reliable generation at a major federal site.
“For generations, Amentum has helped solve some of the nation’s most complex engineering and nuclear challenges, including at the Savannah River Site,” said Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy & Environment business. “This opportunity builds on that legacy by bringing together our expertise in nuclear operations, infrastructure development, and program delivery to help our customer safely and securely accelerate the next generation of AI and energy infrastructure.”
The project would place AI infrastructure, energy generation and national security requirements inside one development model. Amentum said the approach shows how public-private partnerships can advance new technology while strengthening critical infrastructure.
The selection starts negotiations rather than a final lease award. If completed, the project would give Amentum a major role in building infrastructure tied to AI, energy resilience and federal mission needs.
