The contract gives Boeing responsibility for supplying the Australian military with new Class Two SATCOM ground terminals. The systems will use high-speed, wideband satellite links to strengthen connectivity, interoperability and the flow of operational information across Australia’s Integrated Force.
“Designed for the modern battlefield and drawing on BDA’s proven experience delivering enterprise-wide communications systems for Defence, this capability will connect Australia’s Integrated Force across multiple domains,” said Matt Buckle, Boeing Defence Australia’s director of Joint Systems. Boeing said the capability will build on communications infrastructure already delivered by the company for the Australian Defence Force.
“Underpinned by high-speed, wideband SATCOM links, the advanced BLOS system will ensure uninterrupted data flow that allows the Australian Defence Force to connect when needed and operate with confidence when it matters most,” Buckle said. The new terminals are intended to maintain communications beyond direct line of sight in increasingly demanding operating conditions.
The BLOS Class Two SATCOM award is the second contract Boeing Defence Australia will deliver under LAND 4140. The company has already been appointed systems integrator for the program’s Battlefield Management System.
Both capabilities are intended to improve the movement and processing of command-and-control, situational-awareness and targeting information. Boeing said their integration will allow the Australian Defence Force to process that information faster and more efficiently.
The program will also draw on Boeing Defence Australia’s secure Integrated Battlefield Telecommunications Network as a foundation for the next-generation LAND 4140 network. The company said that existing infrastructure will support the Australian Defence Force’s broader software modernization effort.
“We’re uniquely placed to support Defence in their software modernisation, which leverages the secure Integrated Battlefield Telecommunications Network -network delivered by BDA as a core foundation to build the next-generation, integrated network required by Land 4140,” Buckle said. The latest award expands Boeing Defence Australia’s role in the Australian military’s effort to integrate battlefield communications and information systems across multiple domains.
