Brilliant Jump 2024: NATO Allies exercise in dense forest conditions

Story by Brilliant Jump NATO Media Information Centre

Training is well underway in the Drawsko Pomorskie Training area in Northern Poland as military personnel, from five NATO nations, hone their skills during exercise Brilliant Jump 2024.

On Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, soldiers from the 2 Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment conducted FiWAF (Fighting in Woods and Forests), a unique landscape for the regiment based at Kendrew Barracks, Rutland, England.

The vast forests in Poland provide soldiers with an environment to practice the specialist tactics required to fight in dense forests, where movement and visibility present challenges. Command, control and navigation become harder. Noise travels further, and contact with the enemy could occur at much closer range.

Much of NATO’s eastern flank is covered with vast areas of forest, meaning the skills are vital to the defence of the Alliance.

The Infantry regiment, also known as ‘The Poachers’ is a Light Mechanised Infantry Battlion. They are part of the 7th Infantry Brigade and 1st (UK) Division.

They are currently deployed to exercise Brilliant Jump, which is part of the Steadfast Defender series of exercises. They are also part of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF).
