Bittium announced that the Croatian Armed Forces are expanding the deployment of the company’s tactical communications solutions to support the ground-based communications of the Croatian Air Force. The latest phase forms part of a wider modernisation programme for Croatia’s command-and-control communications systems launched in 2022 in cooperation with Croatian technology partner IntellByte INFO.

The project has involved the phased deployment of the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network system and Bittium Tough SDR software-defined radios across different branches of the Croatian military. Bittium said the expansion strengthens the role of its network technology in enabling secure, resilient and interoperable communications across multiple operational domains.

Following earlier deployments within the Croatian Navy and Land Forces, the next stage of the programme extends the IP-based tactical communications network to the Croatian Air Force. The company said the expansion is intended to improve coordination and execution of joint military operations across different services and operational environments.

Bittium stated that the phased implementation approach allows the gradual integration of additional users and capabilities while maintaining compatibility with existing systems and ensuring uninterrupted operational readiness. The company added that the network architecture is designed to support seamless communications between mobile and fixed military units.

Tommi Kangas, senior vice president of Bittium’s Defence & Security business segment, said, “Extending the tactical network to Air Force use is a strong indication of trust in our solution’s performance, scalability, and interoperability.”

“It also demonstrates how a unified IP based network can effectively support modern joint operations across multiple domains,” Kangas added.

The expansion is being carried out under a four-year framework agreement between IntellByte INFO and the Croatian Ministry of Defence covering the supply and integration of tactical communications systems for different branches of the armed forces. Bittium said the latest purchase order connected to the programme is valued at approximately €1.9 million.

Under the latest phase, Bittium will provide TAC WIN system components, Tough SDR Vehicular radios, accessories, waveform software and device management systems. The company will also deliver lifecycle support services intended to support deployment and long-term maintenance of the communications network.

Bittium said its Tactical Wireless IP Network is a software-defined radio-based broadband network system designed for military and public safety applications. The system enables mobile ad hoc networks, link networks and connection networks to operate as a single logical IP-based communications environment.

The TAC WIN system is compatible with existing fixed and wireless communications infrastructure and uses a tactical router capable of integrating wired and wireless broadband data connections. Bittium said the software-based architecture also allows future capability upgrades throughout the operational lifespan of the system.

The company added that its Tough SDR radio family includes handheld and vehicular tactical radios designed to improve situational awareness and operational coordination across military units. According to Bittium, the radios support multiple waveforms and are compatible with NATO-standardised ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform communications used for multinational operations.
