Denmark plans to sign deal for additional Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters in coming months

By Defence Industry Europe

Denmark is planning to acquire a minimum of 10 new F-35 fighter jets from the United States by October, Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed to broadcaster TV2. The purchase would bring the country’s total fleet to approximately 40 aircraft.

While Poulsen did not disclose an exact cost, he stated the procurement would involve “a very large amount of billions.” He also refrained from specifying when the full fleet would be operational.

“I assess, based on what I have spoken to people in the F-35 office, that there is a good opportunity to accelerate further deliveries of F-35 fighter jets if we make a quick decision,” Poulsen said. The Danish government appears intent on expediting the delivery process with prompt decision-making.

The announcement comes after NATO’s recent summit, where the alliance introduced a new target for member states to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product to defence. As a founding member of NATO, Denmark’s planned purchase aligns with the alliance’s push for increased military investment.
