EUR 320 million will be dedicated to enhancing Ukraine’s air defence systems, addressing the urgent need for protection against aerial threats.
Artillery Support: Additional funds will be used for acquiring artillery pieces, shells, and anti-tank mines. A portion of these funds will also cover the maintenance of these donations, ensuring their long-term effectiveness on the battlefield.
F-16 Fighter Jets: The package includes contributions towards Ukraine’s upcoming F-16 capacity, expected to be delivered in the summer. This marks a strategic investment in Ukraine’s aerial combat capabilities.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized the importance of investing directly in Ukraine’s defence industry. “It makes sense to produce the weapons where they are used and by those who use them. This approach not only meets Ukraine’s immediate needs but also secures its future defence capabilities,” said Rasmussen. He expressed hope that this model would inspire other countries to follow suit.
The Danish government is also allocating funds for various NATO Capability Development Projects (CAP). By setting aside additional resources for Ukraine’s defence industry, Denmark sends a clear signal of its commitment to both immediate and long-term support for Ukraine.
Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the comprehensive nature of the aid package. “This is our 18th aid package, focusing heavily on air defence and artillery, which are critically needed by Ukraine. We are also setting aside funds for direct investments in Ukraine’s defence industry and preparing for the upcoming F-16 donation,” said Poulsen.
Poulsen stressed the severity of the situation in Ukraine, reaffirming Denmark’s steadfast support. “With this package, we send an unequivocal message to both Ukraine and the world. We are providing immediate aid and are ready to invest significantly and long-term in Ukraine’s defence industry. Their fight for freedom continues to be our fight as well,” he added.
The Ukraine Fund, established by the Danish government, has allocated a total of EUR 8.7 billion for military support to Ukraine for the period 2023-2028. This includes a recent increase of EUR 590 million for 2024, agreed upon in April 2024. To date, decisions have been made to provide military support worth EUR 5.7 billion under the Ukraine Fund during this period.
