The third phase, known as FAMOUS 3, will receive €79 million in EU funding as part of a total project budget of €115 million. Finland will continue to act as the lead state, with Patria serving as the industrial coordinator.
The FAMOUS programme is being delivered in multiple phases aimed at advancing European armoured vehicle capabilities. The first phase has been completed, while the second phase resulted in the development of the Patria TRACKX tracked armoured vehicle.
Patria TRACKX is described as a new solution designed to enhance military mobility and combat capability on tracked platforms. The system is expected to enter serial production in 2027.
The third phase will build on earlier progress by focusing on standardisation, interoperability and cost efficiency. It aims to improve the performance of both all-terrain and light armoured vehicles while reducing lifecycle costs.
Jussi Järvinen, Executive Vice President of Patria’s Protected Mobility business area, said: “Developing European combat capability rapidly is one of the core missions of EC, supported as a concrete example by joint programmes through EDF funding.” He added: “Since the beginning, the FAMOUS programme has been highly successful and results-driven.”
He continued: “During the previous phase, Patria TRACKX, a truly unique solution for Europe’s mobile armoured sector, was introduced to the market to support Europe’s armoured mobility and combat capability needs and is scheduled to enter serial production in 2027.” He added: “The consortium is now also expanding into new countries and welcoming additional companies, who Patria is honoured to collaborate with.”
Since its launch in 2021, the FAMOUS programme has received more than €100 million in EU funding, with an additional €20 million contributed by participating countries. The initiative has involved 20 countries and more than 50 European defence companies.
Officials said the programme supports the European Commission’s objective of strengthening the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the European defence industry. The next phase will continue efforts to enhance ground combat capabilities across participating nations.
