Estonian defence company Vegvisir unveils VR-based command system at IDEX 2025

Estonian military technology company Vegvisir has introduced a cutting-edge virtual command system designed to enhance fleet management and battlefield coordination. The Vegvisir Virtual Command Station, developed in collaboration with the Estonian Defence Forces, replaces traditional bulky command post screens with a lightweight augmented reality (AR) headset.

The new system was officially launched at IDEX 2025, where Vegvisir CEO Ingvar Pärnamäe presented the technology, accompanied by remarks from Estonian Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur. The headset-based solution allows commanders to access real-time battlefield data, integrating Battlefield Management Systems, UAV and UGV feeds, and sensor information into a single immersive display.

The Vegvisir Visor provides an interactive AR interface, enabling commanders to view maps, video streams, and mission-critical updates in a shared virtual workspace. To further enhance usability, the system includes the Vegvisir Mission Grip, an ergonomic control device featuring gesture support and haptic feedback, making it well-suited for use in armoured personnel carriers (APCs), infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and mobile command posts.

The Virtual Command Station is the latest addition to Vegvisir’s product portfolio, joining Vegvisir Core, which provides 360° see-through-armor vision for manned vehicles, and Vegvisir Remote, which offers an immersive first-person perspective for unmanned and optionally manned assets. The company describes this unified concept as a comprehensive digital battlefield solution aimed at improving situational awareness and decision-making.

Vegvisir CEO Ingvar Pärnamäe highlighted that the system was developed in close cooperation with the Estonian Defence Forces, addressing the need for mobile, low-footprint command setups. A pilot project with the EDF demonstrated the system’s effectiveness in real-world combat scenarios, with insights drawn from the ongoing war in Ukraine to refine the technology.

“We are excited to introduce the Virtual Command Station to the market,” said Pärnamäe. “This system consolidates vital battlefield data into a single, collaborative and immersive interface, ensuring that commanders can make faster, better-informed decisions.” He also noted that initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the head-mounted display innovation, with testers confirming that there is currently no comparable solution on the market.

Beyond military applications, Vegvisir sees potential for civilian use, particularly in emergency response, disaster management, and complex logistical operations.
